We therefore suggest you visit:
The Val d’Orcia
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO “an exceptional example of how the natural landscape was redesigned in the Renaissance period to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing image; the landscape of the Val d’Orcia was celebrated by the painters of the Sienese School, which flourished during the Renaissance. The images of the Val d’Orcia and in particular the reproductions of its landscapes, depicting people living in harmony with nature, have become icons of the Renaissance and profoundly influenced the way of thinking about the landscape in the following years”.
The Valdichiana
“It is not possible to see more beautiful fields; there is not a trench of soil which is not perfectly worked, prepared for sowing. The fodder grows luxuriantly, and all the conditions that are required to make it flourish seem to be found in these lands. In the second year they sowed broad beans for horses, because oats do not grow here. They also sow lupins, which are now already green, and bear their fruits in March. Flax has already been sown; as it stays in the earth all winter, the cold and frost make it more tenacious.”
Lake Trasimeno
The lake contains an ancient and troubled history, manifested by castles, fortresses, churches and abbeys; the works of famous artists, such as those by Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino or those by Nicolò Pomarancio. Legend has it that the nymph of Lake Agilla, madly in love with the beautiful prince Trasimeno, seduced him by dragging him into its waters which thus bear his name.
Three islands emerge from the lake, namely Maggiore, Minore and Polvese. A evocative panoramic road connects the coastal centres of Castiglione del Lago, Borghetto, Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno, Torricella, Magione, Monte del Lago, San Feliciano, San Savino and Sant’Arcangelo.
Salus per aquam
Ancient water locations and avant-garde spas. People of the past and present have found subliminal well-being and rejuvenation. But what makes the Terre di Siena wellness offer unique are the places that host these spas and these include the medieval bath of Bagno Vignoni, the more modern centres of Chianciano Terme, immersed in the land of the Etruscans, the enchanting landscape of Rapolano Terme, the ancient nobility of San Casciano dei Bagni, the harmony of Montepulciano, the completely natural setting of Castiglione d’Orcia, Petriolo, Radicondoli and the “White Whale” waterfall of Bagni San Filippo.
